The NTD Documentary Lab

Summary

The NTD Documentary Lab is a collaborative program between Documentary Africa (DocA) and the END Fund. This initiative supports the creation of six short documentary films with strong social impact, focusing on health-related stories from communities affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

This initiative fosters collaboration between African filmmakers, health professionals, scientists, and community advocates, aiming to produce sensitive, accurate, and grounded storytelling that reflects lived realities.

Program Objectives

  • Support experienced filmmakers committed to socially engaged storytelling.
  • Connect filmmakers with real-life, community-based narratives from affected regions.
  • Produce short documentaries that can be used as tools for awareness and advocacy through community screenings. 

Program Outcomes 

  • Six powerful short documentaries rooted in real stories from NTD-affected communities are produced, creating immediate impact and paving the way for future feature-length projects that expand and deepen the narrative.
  • Selected filmmakers will receive training and mentorship to enhance their impact-driven storytelling and craft outreach strategies that boost the relevance and reach of their films.
  • Community screenings held to raise awareness of NTDs and spark dialogue, using the films to inform the public, policymakers, and key stakeholders.
  • Increased collaboration between filmmakers, health professionals, and local communities to strengthen the social impact of documentary filmmaking.
